Atlanta Tech Aviation Mechanic Programs

Atlanta Technical College trains aviation mechanics in the city of Atlanta through separate FAA-certificated Airframe and Powerplant certificates. It is a low-cost public option with small, ranked cohorts, but it does not offer a single combined A&P credential.

Verified September 30, 2026 against the college’s 2026-27 catalog, program FAQs, FAA pass-rate data and Georgia HOPE rules.

Quick Facts

  • Length: 3 semesters per certificate (Airframe or Powerplant)
  • Cost: $6,999 Airframe / $6,357 Powerplant (in-state tuition + fees)
  • Location: Atlanta, GA

Our Take

Atlanta Tech fits a Georgia resident inside the city who wants a public, HOPE-eligible path and can attend full-time days. Each certificate takes three semesters. The main trade-off is structure: you complete Airframe and Powerplant as two separate certificates, and admission is competitive, with 25 seats per cohort.

In-state tuition at $107 per credit hour plus mandatory fees of $407 per semester, before the 15-credit-per-term tuition cap. The “both certificates” row is our arithmetic, not a published program. Books, tools and FAA exam fees are extra.

What You Will Actually Pay

Tuition and mandatory fees come to $6,999 for Airframe and $6,357 for Powerplant. The college’s own estimates are higher, $9,626 and $8,626, likely because they include books, tools or supplies, but the college does not say what they cover.

Georgia residents eligible for the HOPE Grant have tuition covered at $107 per credit hour, leaving about $1,221 in fees per certificate plus books and tools. The college also lists the HOPE Career Grant and GI Bill benefits; see the 2026-27 HOPE Career Grant list.

To hold both ratings, you need both certificates, about six semesters and $13,356 in tuition and fees before aid. FAA testing is extra: roughly $500–$600 for the written tests and $1,000–$1,600 or more for the oral and practical exam.

Curriculum

The Airframe certificate covers FAA general topics plus airframe structures, sheet metal, composites, hydraulics, landing gear, electrical and environmental systems. The Powerplant certificate covers reciprocating and turbine engines, fuel metering, ignition, propellers and engine inspection. Course lists are in the Atlanta Tech 2026-27 catalog.

Admission

  • Admission is in fall and spring, with ranked selection for 25 seats per cohort.
  • Students must be at least 18.
  • Classes are full-time days, Monday–Thursday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.

FAA Pass Rates

Atlanta Tech graduates passed 27 of 33 FAA written tests (81.8%) in the FAA’s pass-rate report from August 2023 through December 2024: General 3 of 8, Airframe 12 of 13 and Powerplant 12 of 12. The General test result is weak, but small numbers make it volatile. The FAA labels this data preliminary.
